Description: Dear Readers,

Germany has emerged as the biggest contributor in helping these countries to cope with the situation – in this way, Germany has doubled its pledge for 2016, aiming at providing up to 330 Million Euros in assistance to Lebanon in 2016 only.

And as a participant in the Geneva peace talks, Germany is actively contributing in trying to find a political situation in Syria and the end of the conflict – which we see as a necessary prerequisite for the safe return of refugees to their homeland.

We are standing at Lebanon’s side, and not ´just with words: Germany has taken in more refugees from Syria than any other European country. We are also a major donor to International Organisations such as UNHCR and UNICEF, and support not only refugees but also the Lebanese host communities which have come under considerable economic and social pressure.

Following the London conference of March 2016 on Syria and the region, 8 years have passed since the first edition of a “Special” on Germany, and I am therefore very happy that we are able to present you today with a second edition, updating you on some recent developments in Germany and but also on the work of our German institutions in Lebanon.

In the present crisis affecting Syria and the entire neighboring region, Germany is fully committed to assist Lebanon in easing the burden caused by the presence of more than 1 million refugees on its soil.
