Description: The three towns of Aley, Bhamdoun, and Sofar are the historic summer mountain resorts of Lebanon. Since the 19th century, Lebanese and well-to-do Arabs from neighboring countries have descended upon these towns, which with their cool, congenial climate offered a welcome respite from the heat that plagues the entire Middle East during summer. Aley, the town closest to Beirut, has been carefully restored and now showcases a noble architectural heritage. Many of the renovated traditional Lebanese stone houses have been converted into restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, and various hotels have opened here over the past few years. Slightly further up the mountain lies Bhamdoun. With its splendid setting overlooking Mount Lebanon's deep valleys, Bhamdoun has long been a favorite with Arab travelers. Sofar has been restored more recently than its two sister towns, and it perhaps showcases some of the most stunning late 19th-century and early 20th-century homes in Mount Lebanon.
