Description: Other noteworthy stops in Southern Lebanon include the Phoenician temple of Eshmoun dating back to the 7th century AD. The temple is in Bustan el Sheikh, just ouside of Sidon. The approach to the site is along a Roman colonnaded road, and the oldest section is a pyramid-shaped structure dating back to the 6th century. Near the angle of the temple is a sanctuary of Venus/Astarte. Ancient mosaics and friezes can be spotted throughout the site. Unfortunately, the most significant finds of Eshmoun’,,,s temple were pillaged by 19th century excavators and are now on view in the Louvre, in Paris, and in the Topkapi Archeological Museum in Istanbul. Some sarcophagi were kept by the Lebanese government and are now exhibited at the National Museum of Beirut.
