Description: Located in Wadi Taym, a long fertile valley lying at the foot of majestic Mount Hermon, Hasbaya is a charming town replete with historical attractions. The town’,,,,,s centerpiece is a splendid citadel, which is part of the historic Chehabi compound. The Chehab emirs once ruled the entire area and lived inside the compound for eight centuries. Today, the ownership of the site is shared by about 50 branches of that same family, some of whom still live there permanently.
The citadel consists of six floors, three abode ground and three underground. Since it was built during subsequent historic eras, the building incorporates various styles, including medieval elements, such as arrow slit windows, and Crusader touches, like the tower in the southwest corner.
The Chehabi compound of which the citadel is part covers 20,000 square meters and includes several medieval houses and a mosque. Other noteworthy sites in the Hasbaya area include the Roman temple at Hebbariyyeh, Souk el Khan, where a fruit and vegetable market is held every Tuesday, the village of Rachaya el Foukhar where pottery is made, and Khalwat el Bayada, the principle sanctuary of the Druze community.
Not far from Hasbaya, south of the pretty town of Marjeyoun, lies Khiam, with traditional houses cascading down its hillside and overlooking Marjeyoun. The al Daradarah spring flows west of town and irrigates Khiam’,,,,s fields and orchards.
