Description: Tyre, south of Sidon, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and it has some of the world’,,,,s most fascinating archaeological ruins, mostly from Roman times, but also from the Phoenician, Greek, and Byzantine eras. There are two main areas to visit in Tyre: the inland hippodrome area and the old city on the peninsula.
The old city lies right along the Mediterranean. The archeological digs are on the southern side and feature huge marble paving stones and an ancient mosaic path. At the north end lie the remains of a 5th century circus (roman period) and the foundations of a crusader castle, and even further north are the remains of a 4th century cathedral. About 1 kilometer from the coast lies Tyre’,,,,s hippodrome and necropolis, one of the largest Roman sites in the Mediterranean region.
The necropolis is a stunning grouping of tombs and sarcophagi from Byzantine or Roman times. The vast hippodrome was unearthed about 80 years ago and is one of the biggest and best preserved Roman sites in the world. The Triumphal Arch, standing proud amongst the ruins, almost dominates the stunning scenery. The seaside southern town of Tyre also has a colorful souk, an Ottoman inn, a Mamluk house that now functions as a heritage and information center, and a double-domed Shia mosque.
