1. Elie Saab first burst on to the red carpet scene in 2002, dressing Halle Berry with the gown that started it all. Berry went on to become the first African-American woman to win an Oscar, cementing Saab's contribution to pop culture history.

2. Saab's self-taught, having started designing at the age of nine when his sister served as his model. His parents were not very supportive of his passion for fashion but they encourage later on. "Like all normal families, they would have liked me to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer," he said in an interview.

3. He opened his first atelier in Beirut at the age of 18, somehow managing to hire a staff of 15 people. Through word-of-mouth publicity, he became one of the most sought-after designers in the Arab world. "I am not only a fashion designer, I have the vision of an entrepreneur, a businessman," Saab has been quoted as saying.

4. He's always asked to dress the world's royalty.  One remarkable moment was when Queen Rania of Jordan wore Elie Saab to the ceremony where she was crowned in 1999.
