Wines of Lebanon

Home Wines of Lebanon IXSIR

IXSIR derives from "Iksir" (AL-Iksir), the original Arabic word for "Elixir". A word common to many languages, it defines the purest form of all substances, connoting a secret potion that grants eternal youth and love.

Established by friends with a common passion for wine, the vision behind IXSIR has been to reveal the best terroirs of Lebanon, some long since forgotten. IXSIR's vineyards are spread across the mountains of Lebanon and culminate at an altitude of 1800m, making it the highest vineyards in the Northern Hemisphere. Grapes are cultivated with respect to sustainable agriculture and winemaking occurs in a winery twice recognized as one of the greenest buildings in the world.
Located in a small village called Basbina in the Northern district of Batroun, Lebanon, IXSIR is perched at an altitude of 380m above sea level and surrounded by lush green hills. The winery synthesizes the charm of a restored 400-year-old feudal house with the factory's modern built structure, linking tradition to innovation. Arriving at the site, visitors slowly discover the setting as a minimal intervention on the landscape. A open well staircase leads to the backbone of the old house, where lies the mechanical and management spaces, the fermentation area, the storage stacks, the operation space and the cellar.
The winery maximizes the use of natural light and skylights throughout the premises to minimize its energy consumption. The vat spaces open up to the Northwest to take in natural ventilation, critical to the fermentation process. The cellar area is completely buried within the ground, acting as a thermal sponge and creating the needed equilibrium of temperature and humidity. The mechanical and management spaces top the factory areas and control all exchange flows within the winery.
Wit its natural reliance on gravity ti fill vats, it reduces its dependence on mechanical pumping systems, respecting the integrity of wine making. In addition to rainwater collection for irrigation purposes, IXSIR recycles all outputs such as wastewater, and vegetable residue, which is then turned into compost to fertilize its vineyards.
Experience IXSIR, a perfect example of the old seamlessly blending with the new, showcasing groundbreaking winemaking in an enchanting and historic setting.
